I have had a stiff neck on and off for ages. had visits to the chiropractor which helped although the last time I went - the first time I'd seen him since RA diagnosed he was very cautious and said he couldn't do much. Anyway it has started playing up again. It kept waking me up last night and is really painful today.ThumbDown Anyone got any suggestions? I suspect a new pillow might help, but what sort. I'm waiting for an appointment with the OT re my wrist so I will ask but my GP said I am likely to have a long wait as they are very busy!!
So, any suggestions gratefully received folks.
Thanks
Sue

Hi Sue

Neck problems where RA is involved should always be treated with care and a referral to a physio for exercises appropriate to you would seem to be the way forward. Perhaps your GP or rheumatology nurse can refer you. What I always find helpful are warm wheat bags that just hit the spot and provide a bit of temporary relief.

I would certainly follow up sooner rather than later ThumpUp

I agree with Lyn. My neck plays up intermittently, I have a orthopaedic shaped memory foam pillow I got from Dunelm. It really helps me.

Thanks both. Am dosed up on co-codamol- which is making no apparent difference and have been wandering around clutching a hot water bottle to my neck. I intended to bring my wheat bag to school but forgot. ThumbDown Hot water bottles really don't have the necessary flexibility. To top it all I'm stuck here at school until 8pm as it is parents evening for year 7s and I am a year 7 pupil. I live too far away to make it worth going home. Will ring my GP if no better tomorrow.

Hi Sue.
I have problems with my neck too and I use a memory foam pillow, I tried a few before I found one that worked for me, unfortunateley i cant remember where i got it from and recently i've noticed my pillow forgets and doesn't return to its original state so I just turn it over and its as good as new. hope this helps...Eileen

Hi Sue

Sorry to hear that you have a painful neck. I suffered from that too for ages and wasn't getting any sleep or pain relief from the co-codamol until my doctor prescribed amitripytline 25mg to be taken in the evening. After a few nights they worked really well and controlled the pain but the only trouble is they make you very sleepy so i overcome this my taking them at 7pm so that i can get up in the morning!!

I have also tried heating those wheat bags and they give a huge amount of comfort to the neck.

Hope you feel better soon.

Love Shirley x

Hi Sue have you tried wearing a light, soft warm scarf during the day and maybe wearing a pyjama top with a collar at night to keep your neck warm. Hope it helps. Kathleen xx

Thanks for all the support. I saw a GP yesterday who referred me for a cervical spine xray which I had today. I was amazed to be able to get an appointment so quickly. A combination of heated wheat bags, voltarol ointment and a day on the sofa has helped so I was able to get back to work today. Hopefully it was just some sort of muscular spasm - we shall see.
Take care all.
Sue
